It follows the story of death-row inmate Darrell Standing, who withdraws into vivid fantasies of past lives, including incarnations as a French nobleman and an Englishman in ancient Korea, to escape the horrors of prison life — and extended stretches in a straitjacket. This is one of Jack London’s most complicated and creative compositions, based on the life and imprisonment of his buddy Ed Morrell.
