Marcello Pera (Lucca, 1943) estudió filosofía en la Universidad de Pisa, donde ha enseñado Filosofía de la Ciencia desde 1976. Desde 1992 es catedrático de dicha universidad. En 1996 fue elegido senador, siendo reelegido en todas las elecciones desde entonces. Desde 2001 hasta 2006 fue Presidente del Senado italiano. Además de sus publicaciones sobre el método, la demostración y la argumentación científicas, es colaborador habitual de diferentes diarios y revistas de la prensa italiana. Es coautor, junto a Joseph Ratzinger (ahora Benedicto XVI) del libro Sin raíces.
