Murders in Derbyshire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were not, surprisingly, as numerous as those in other counties in the Midlands region. But many that were committed left people shocked and bewildered by the savagery and cunning of those who took the lives of others. Searching through records and newspapers reveals some terrifying cases including two brothers under sentence of death for murder, who committed suicide rather than face the hangman. Then there was the man who pushed a cart through a small village with the body of his little victim hidden under a pile of rubbish while her friends played nearby.
