In 1892, the narrator, having just given birth, is taken to the countryside to rest and recuperate. The large house, fresh air, and sprawling gardens are meant to relax her mind and body. However, the treatment calls for isolation, bed rest, and boredom. This catalyst leads the narrator down a path where reality and fantasy merge together in a very unhealthy way.
