About the author


Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843-1922) was an English expert in the Pāli language used to record the sacred texts of Theravada Buddhism. After teaching the language at the University of London, he became Chair of Comparative Religion at the University of Manchester. He founded the Pāli Text Society in 1881 to promote the study of these writings.
