Promotion (1987) und Habilitation (1992) an der Universität Zürich. 1993–1996 Professor für Klassische Philologie/Gräzistik in Mainz, seither in Zürich. 2005–2012 Direktor des Istituto Svizzero di Roma. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Frühgriechische Philosophie, Rhetorik, Platonismus, jüdisch-hellenistische und frühchristliche Literatur.
