Após a publicação da primeira parte de sua Estética, em 1963, o filósofo húngaro György Lukács começou a trabalhar no ambicioso projeto de uma Ética que sintetizaria sua longa trajetória intelectual. Em suas investigações, porém, notou a ‘necessidade de uma elaboração prévia: a determinação histórico-concreta do modo de ser e de reproduzir-se do ser social’, como aponta José Paulo Netto, professor da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Esses esforços são concluídos em 1969 e publicados postumamente com o título de Para uma ontologia do ser social. Com o objetivo de explicar melhor alguns conceitos apresentados, no início dos anos 1970 Lukács passa a trabalhar no manuscrito do que seriam os Prolegômenos para uma ontologia do ser social: questões de princípios para uma ontologia hoje tornada possível, publicados também postumamente, em 1984, e agora traduzidos pela primeira vez para o português pela Boitempo Editorial.
