James Elphinston (1721–1809) was a Scottish educator, philologist, and linguist, notable for his advocacy for spelling reform in the English language. Born in Edinburgh, Elphinston was educated at the University of Aberdeen and later moved to London, where he pursued a career in teaching and literature. His scholarly work was marked by an interest in the principles of English orthography and its standardization, leading to the publication of his renowned work, “A Minniature ov Inglish Orthoggraphy” in 1765. This book reflected his unique approach to spelling reform, in which he aimed to bring about greater consistency between English spelling and pronunciation. Elphinston”s orthographic system did not gain widespread acceptance, largely due to its complexity and departure from established norms. Despite this, his work contributed to ongoing discussions about language reform and the idiosyncrasies of English spelling. Elphinston”s literary style can be characterized by a didactic and often prescriptive tone, reflecting his background in education and his commitment to linguistic clarity. Throughout his career, Elphinston wrote several other works that focused on language and its instruction, although his spelling reforms remained his most distinctive and remembered contribution to English philology.
