John Lydgate (c. 1370 – c. 1451) was a medieval English poet and monk, renowned for his large and diverse body of work, and his pioneering contributions to the literary landscape of the 15th century. He was born in Lidgate, Suffolk and became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds. Lydgate was a disciple of Geoffrey Chaucer, and his work reflects the influence of Chaucer”s narrative style and his role in the development of English literature. One of Lydgate”s most notable works is “The Temple of Glass, ” a poem that exemplifies his adept use of dream visions—a popular device among medieval poets—and his fascination with classical themes and courtly love. Composed in the early 15th century, the poem is an allegory that delves into the nature of love, a common subject for poets of the medieval period. Lydgate”s scholarly approach to poetry, characterized by his use of iambic pentameter and a narrative style replete with moral and philosophical themes, marks him as a significant figure in the transition from medieval to Renaissance literature. His other major works include “The Fall of Princes” and “The Troy Book, ” both of which further cement his reputation as an erudite and prolific author whose contributions still resonate in the annals of English literary history.
