The science of history has changed considerably in the last few decades, and the writings of Jürgen Kocka from the past 40 years reflect these changes, from the controversial rise of social history in the 1960s to the influence of constructivist cultural history in the 1980s and the modern interest in transnationality and global history. They also document what has remained constant throughout Jürgen Kocka’s work despite the many changes: his particular interest in social history, in analytical reflection and in history as a discipline that presents critical argumentation and orientations for public discussion.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Jürgen Kocka gehört zu den bedeutendsten Historikern Nachkriegsdeutschlands. Er war von 1973–1988 Professor für allgemeine Geschichte an der Universität Bielefeld und von 1988–2009 Professor für die Geschichte der industriellen Welt an der Freien Universität Berlin. Von 2001–2007 war er Präsident des Wissenschaftszentrums Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) und 1998–2009 Direktor am Zentrum bzw. Berliner Kolleg für Vergleichende Geschichte Europas. Seit 2009 ist er Permanent Fellow am Kolleg »Arbeit und Lebenslauf in globalgeschichtlicher Perspektive« der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
