She has studied on life history and evolution of migratory fishes. She specializes in early life history, migratory diversity, and conservation of eels. She also focuses on ocean science education and has published many books. Soichi Watanabe is an associate professor of the University of Tokyo. His research centers around osmoregulation, nutrient absorption, and biological defence mechanisms inteleost fish.
