This short nineteenth-century American novel about "English Domestic Life" is interesting for the way it models the tradition of the Victorian novel from reading rather than experience. Farro was an African-American woman who obviously read Charles Dickens and probably Jane Austen, and chooses to write an "English" novel by genre rather than an "American" one. (Goodreads)
