The Travis Sight Word Books were developed by my coworker and myself out of necessity. We are both early childhood teachers, and we were always struggling to fi nd good sight word books that integrated letters and phonemes to help our young children learn to read. I researched the most frequently used words, comparing and analyzing them, which resulted in the new updated Travis Sight Word list for kindergarten readers. These sight words are in a series of twenty-six stories and increase reading fluency. Incorporated into the stories are letters and phonemes that are taught by order of frequency and then reliability. Careful planning resulted in each story reviewing phonemes and sight words that were taught in the previous story. These stories can be used as a weekly lesson and hold high interest for young children. Color and number words are incorporated for early writing skills, and the stories are made to be expendable. The children can write in them, circling sight words, coloring, and answering story questions at the end of the story through drawings or beginning writing. When used in a classroom setting, the books can be sent home with each child for further reading practice.

Tiffany Trotter has been teaching prekindergarten and kindergarten for twenty-three years and has her national board certification in early childhood. She currently works with children that have special needs in her school district and is a member of the Louisiana Early Childhood Association. Her degree is in child development, and she has always had an interest in teaching young children to read. The interest led to the development of the Travis Sight Word list and the creation of twenty-six stories that teach young children phonics and sight words weekly, enabling young children to learn the basics and begin to read fluently at a young age.
