William March nasceu em uma família pobre no Alabama, em 1893. Alistou-se na Marinha e combateu na Primeira Guerra Mundial, tendo recebido condecorações dos governos norteamericano e francês. Largou a farda logo após o conflito, e os horrores do confronto lhe inspiraram a escrever seu primeiro romance, Company K. Publicou seis romances e quatro compilações de contos. Morreu em 1954, um mês após o lançamento do seu livro mais celebrado, Menina Má.
