About the author


Theodore Ayrault Dodge (1842-1909) was a historian whose experiences as a Union officer in the Civil War informed his later writings.  He wrote another Civil War history entitled The Campaign of Chancellorsville (1881).  He is also the author of the twelve-volume History of the Art of War (1890-1907).
