Smollett’s last rollicking picaresque novel, published in 1771, is considered one of his funniest. Inspired by the author’s return to his native Scotland, it is told in the form of letters penned by six characters—most of whom have decidedly different takes on a group tour of England’s seaside spas towns and resorts.
About the author
Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish author and poet whose picaresque novels, such as Roderick Random and Peregrine Pickle, influenced many later authors, including Charles Dickens. Educated in medicine at the University of Glasgow, Smollett earned a commission as a surgeon aboard the HMS Chichester. He settled in Downing Street to devote himself to writing.
