Capes nasceu em Londres, uma das onze crianças: sua irmã mais velha, Harriet Capes , era uma famosa tradutora e autora de mais de uma dúzia de livros infantis. Seu tio, John Moore Capes, publicou um romance semi-autobiográfico. Seu avô, John Capes, havia se convertido ao catolicismo romano , por isso Capes foi educado como católico e educado no colégio católico Beaumont College . No entanto, ele rapidamente “desistiu”. Capes foi um prolífico autor vitoriano , publicando mais de quarenta volumes – romances, mistérios, poesia, história – juntamente com muitos artigos para as revistas da época. Sua carreira de escritor inicial foi como jornalista, mais tarde tornando-se editor de um artigo chamado The Theatre , que era bem conhecido no final do século XIX em Londres.
