Edward Dowden was a nineteenth-century Irish critic and poet. At Dublin’s Trinity College he won the vice-chancellor’s prize for English verse and prose, was the first senior moderator in ethics and logic, and was president of the Philosophical Society. After graduation he went to Dublin University to teach oratory and English literature. His first book, Shakespeare, his Mind and Art, set him on the path toward his other works on the bard; and he later began writing about and compiling the works of Southey for the English Men of Letters series, a book of correspondence, and a collection of poems.
