Rien n’est sur, il est convenu désormais de parler plutôt de textes ésopiques que de fables d’Ésope. Ces fables constituent une somme de la sagesse populaire des Grecs. Elles inspireront ensuite Phedre a Rome, puis les conteurs arabes. Les fables d’Ésope ont été compilées et publiées au XIVe siecle, par Planude, un moine byzantin. Isaac Nicolas de Nivelet avait publié en 1610 une version d’Ésope en latin, et cette traduction avait été rééditée en 1660. La Fontaine l’a probablement lue…
