Sentimental Education is a representative full-length novel of French great writer, Flaubert (1821 – 1880). The protagonist, Frederic Moreau, is from provincial France. On his way to Paris to go to university, he met the publisher, Mr. Arnoux and his wife. He was very fond of Mrs. Arnoux at first sight. When he arrived in Paris, he tried every means to approach Mrs. Arnoux. However, she was forbearing and reserved. It was not easy to get her love. Desperate and disappointed, Frederic was entangled in the embrace of several different types of women, such as social butterfly Rosanette, big speculator Mr. Dambreuse’s wife, and Louise, a woman from his hometown. In addition to love affairs, the current situation was turbulent, Frederic’s interaction with people of various political tendencies, and the tide of the February 1848 revolution were directly reflected in the novel. As the translator Mr. Li Jianwu said, "Moreau’s sentimental education is essentially Flaubert’s sentimental education. However, Moreau is not Flaubert. He is a common young man with impure nature and poor endowment. He is passionately devoted, weak and lacks perseverance." "Understanding young people like Moreau is tantamount to understanding the middle class. They are selfish, however, not exactly selfish. Moreau was always generous and enthusiastic. Many people are generous and enthusiastic, have experience and the philosophy of life obtained from, and are not indiscriminately good. However, Moreau is not so. He is a piece of soft dough that can be rubbed by people at will. He has no distinct personality; his personality is flexible like a piano with which everyone can play the resonance he needs rather than the sound of Moreau himself. He regards other people’s teasing as an autonomous and gifted sound. He does not know himself but he thinks he knows; he mistakes his temporary habits for the revelation of genius, so he is overconfident. He stays on the surface of things, inhales forever, remains obscure forever and has mobile receptiveness. There is no one more easily accessible than him. He is like the sludge on the river bed which still deposits and silts on the river bed although waves flow past it. He circles in the rapids thinking that he was fluctuating: he may have a sense of movement, of course he has many, but never forms a will or vitality."
