Manfred Malzahn wurde 1955 in Iserlohn geboren – in einer Familie mit zahlreichen internationalen Verknüpfungen einschließlich eines schottischen Zweiges. Sein Studium der Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft schloss er 1983 ab, mit einer Doktorarbeit über den zeitgenössischen Roman in Schottland. Dem Zivildienst beim Goethe-Institut folgten dann Lehrtätigkeiten an Universitäten in Edinburgh (Schottland), Monastir (Tunesien), Sétif (Algerien), Zomba (Malawi) und Chia-yi (Taiwan). Zur Zeit ist er Professor für Englische Literatur an der Universität der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate in Al-Ain.
