Hans-Joachim Gehrke ist Professor emeritus an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg sowie Director of Outreach des University College Freiburg. Zuvor war er Präsident des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in Berlin und Professor für Alte Geschichte an den Universitäten Freiburg, FU Berlin und Würzburg. Er nahm verschiedene Gastprofessuren wahr, u.a. an den Universitäten Zürich und München sowie am Collège de France. Er ist Mitglied verschiedener Akademien und Institute, u.a. der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen vornehmlich auf dem Gebiet der griechischen Geschichte, besonders der archaischen und der hellenistischen Zeit.
