Before pursuing a career in writing, he worked variously as a clerk, soldier, and journalist.
Reid’s adventure novels often featured themes of exploration, nature, and survival. His works were widely popular during the 19th century, and he became one of the best-selling authors of his time. Some of his notable works include:
‘The Rifle Rangers’ (1850): One of Reid’s early novels, set during the Texan war of independence.
‘The Scalp Hunters’ (1851): A tale of adventure set in the American West, focusing on the fur trade and conflicts with Native Americans.
‘The Quadroon’ (1856): A novel set in the American South, exploring issues of race and society.
