The Cranial Nerves in Neurology [PDF ebook]
A comprehensive and systematic evaluation of cranial nerves, pathology and specific conditions

Destek

This book presents a complete summary about the 12 pairs of cranial nerves (CN). They control much of the motor and sensory functions of the head and neck such as smell, sight, eye movement, and feeling in the face. The CN also control balance, hearing, and swallowing.

The examination of the CN is an important part of the clinical neurological examination. Additionally, to the anatomy, extensive knowledge about further diagnostic tools are necessary such as neuroimaging, and electrophysiology.

The book is divided into three parts: a general part with anatomy and imaging, a systematic part grouping the 12 pairs of cranial nerves, and a part describing cranial nerve functions in specific conditions and diseases.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Grisold , FAAN is a specialist for neurology and psychiatry. In neurology he has a background in neuropathology and neurophysiology. Special interests are general neurology, neurooncology, neuromuscular disease, education and patient related issues as pain, palliative care and advocacy. He has experience in hospital practice, research and private practice. He has participated in EU projects on paraneoplastic syndromes. The scientific focus is the effect of cancer on the peripheral nervous system, in particular in peripheral neurotoxicity and the direct effects of cancer. In regard to neuromuscular disease he has experience with autoimmune diseases, in particular myasthenia gravis, inflammatory neuropathies, cranial nerve lesions and mononeuropathies. He is involved in international neurological societies and has organized several international neurological congresses, among the EANO congress in 2006 in Vienna , the ICNMD2018 in Vienna , and was involved inthe organization of the World Congress of Neurology 2013, in Vienna, as the congress secretary. He has currently more than 600 publications ,   279 pubmed quoted and  16 books (as editor, among these the Atlas of neuromuscular disease (1-3 rd. ed.) published by Springer.Since 2022 he is the president of the World Federation of Neurology.
Walter Struhal is a clinical neurologist with a sub specialty degree in neurointensive care. He is head of the clinical department of neurology at the university hospital of Tulln (Lower Austria)  of the Karl Landsteiner Private University (KL) of Health Sciences. Walter Struhal has a strong interest in neurointensive care, the autonomic nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease as well as education research.Walter Struhal has elected functions in a number of international and national scientific bodies including the World Federation of Neurology, the European Federation of Autonomic Societies, and is Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology.

Anna Grisold, MD, Ph D, is a consultant neurologist at the Department of Neurology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, where she leads the neuro-oncology specialist clinic. She has a clinical and research interest in the management of neuromuscular diseases and neurological complications in patients with cancer. She earned her Ph D in Clinical Neurosciences. Throughout her career, Dr. Grisold pursued further expertise in neuromuscular diseases (especially peripheral neuropathies) and neuro-oncology through clinical and research fellowships at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York). Moreover, she has (co-)authored more than 20 publications listed on Pub Med.
