Anthony Norris Groves (1795–1853) stands as a significant figure in the history of Christian missions, particularly remembered for his contributions to the principles of faith missions and his influences on the Plymouth Brethren movement. Born in Newton Valance, Hampshire, England, Groves studied dentistry before turning his attentions towards missionary work and theological reflection. His passion for evangelism led him to leave a comfortable life in England to serve as a missionary in Baghdad and later in India. Groves is best known for his seminal work “Christian Devotedness” (1825), which advocates for the complete trust in God”s provision and the renouncement of personal wealth for the sake of Gospel work. He argued that Christians should live economically, saving their surplus wealth for the cause of Christian missions. His literary style is characterized by a straightforward and earnest tone, underpinned by his deeply held conviction that scriptural teachings should inform and transform the believer”s daily life (Pierson, 1889). His writing, though not extensive in volume, had a vast impact on various groups and individuals, such as George Müller and Hudson Taylor, who carried forward his mission philosophy rooted in faith and piety.
