Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, the First Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. This volume covers his youthful zeal, years in India and Portugal, political reversals, and final reckoning with Napoleon. It also contains biographical sketches of his lieutenants. Griffiths humbly qualifies the book not as a Life of Wellington, but as an estimate of “one of the greatest captains, the most honest and loyal citizens and statesmen that have served this country.”
