This book is intended especially for those who are in the Spring-time of life. It is at this character-forming period that the faithful warning, the wise counsel, and the sympathetic admonition are particularly valuable.
Many young men and young women fail in life from the want of a friendly guiding word at the outset of their career; while many, now occupying good and honorable positions, owe and attribute their success to the timely counsel, at the start, of some friend practically interested in their welfare.
Mr. Spurgeon was emphatically the friend of the young. During the course of his marvellous and God-honoured ministry, his supreme aim was to lead them to Christ, and to encourage and stimulate them in their aspirations after true nobility. Now that his voice is hushed, his powerful pen still speaks; and in this book, with persuasive earnestness, and characteristic force, he shows those who are standing upon the threshold how to make
“A Good Start”
It is impossible to over-estimate the importance of the start we make in the journey of life, since it necessarily affects and largely determines all that follows.
By personal experience I can bear my unqualified testimony to the wisdom and sagacity of my friend C. H. Spurgeon’s teaching. No life can be truly successful unless lived on the lines of Christian principles. The first step must be the surrender of the heart to Christ, and the whole of life’s journey must be lived, as it may, in conscious fellowship with Him. It is in this way we form true conceptions of life and duty, and are enabled to give practical embodiment to God’s idea concerning us.
I wish for this book a large and growing circulation, and pray that it may be used by God in helping thousands of young men and young women, not only to make a good start, but also in the upbuilding of a useful, a righteous and God-glorifying life.
