The primary products of the coking industry are fuels, and combustion plays a large part in their manufacture. The subjects of fuels and combustion, are, therefore, first reviewed; coal is then discussed, its origin, classification, and properties; next the preparation of coal; the coking processes themselves; and finally recovery of the coal chemicals. Additional chapters are devoted to carbonization processes other than those carried on in byproduct and beehive ovens, including gas retorts, low-temperature carbonization processes, and the Curran-Knowles oven. Economics and trends in the industry are considered in the two final chapters. Now a days, the need for an up-to-date work on byproduct coking was clearly demonstrated during the preparation of lecture material for classes in the coking of coal for the engineering, science, and management war training program of the United States government. The notes made of the material which was collected have formed the foundation of this book; but the original ones were greatly expanded and revised, and much additional material was added. Diagrams and illustrations are of great supplemental utility, and the authors have endeavored to be liberal in their use.
