The scene is laid mainly in London but the motive power comes from Albania in the person of a young Greek, Remington Kara, who with his wealth, culture, and cruelty dominates the tale. He hates John Lexman, the novelist, because Lexman has married the woman he desired. By a subtly laid plot he effects Lexman’s imprisonment for murder and also, by motor and aeroplane, his escape from jail. Lexman is carried off to a dungeon in Albania while his friend, T. X. Meredith, assistant commissioner of police in Scotland Yard, searches for him in vain. The denouement of the story turns on a woman, a Patagonian explorer, and a murder. (Amazon)
