The Logic of the Humanities is an important work of Ernst Cassirer, a famous German philosopher and representative figure of the New Kantian Marburg School. Cassirer once planned to take this book as the fourth volume of his lifelong work, Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, with discussing the humanities revealing various research objects of humanities, and explaining the mental activities behind the research as its main purpose; its purpose is to explain the inherent "scientific" characteristic of humanities through comparison and introspection under the strong oppression of natural science and strive for the dignity and status that it shall possess. The author discusses major issues, such as the object of humanities, the different perception modes of nature and humanity, the differences between the natural and humanistic concepts, cultural forms, cultural values and modern cultural tragedies, and aims to explain the basic questions of possibility of humanity and the humanities. This book was published in 1942. It, together with An Essay on Man (1944), forms the representative achievements of Cassirer’s cultural and philosophical thinking in later years. It was also a philosophical classic of modern western culture.
