George Bowling, the protagonist of Coming Up for Air, is a 45-year-old fat man who works as a regional inspector in an insurance company. He was unable to achieve his desire but unwilling to accept less. He had a wife and two children to feed, and he suffered from bills, tuition and other expenses all day long. Occasionally, a poster reminded him of his hometown by the Thames and his childhood at that time. Coming Up for Air adopts two-line description. One line shows the impact and influence of social changes characterized by industrialization and urbanization in British from pre-World War I to pre-World War II on traditional towns. Another main line brings out the reactions and actions of different social strata in dealing with the crisis of the World War.
