Gilbert Adair wurde 1944 in Edinburgh geboren, lebte von 1968 bis 1980 in Paris und anschließend in London, wo er 2011 starb. Er war Schriftsteller, Drehbuchautor, Übersetzer und Kolumnist und schrieb u.a. die Romane Blindband, Der Tod des Autors, Liebestod auf Long Island, Der Schlüssel zum Turm und Träumer. Aufsehen erregte auch seine Übersetzung von Georges Perecs Roman La Disparition, der im Original wie in der Übersetzung ohne den Buchstaben E auskommt.
