America has had a wild ride in the first two decades of the 21st Century. The period began with Y2K hysteria, fears about the digital leap from 1999 to 2000. The change occurred with few disruptions and yet two years later a terrorist attack on America shook the world. America rebounded from that outside assault and yet the shock was greater 20 years later when the beacon of democracy was attacked by its own people. The culprits behind the attempted coup were hate speech and white supremacy as spread by the social media and led by the US president. Helen Fogarassy is an internationalist writer with over 20 years of United Nations experience. She was born in Hungary, raised in the American mid-west, and has lived in New York as an adult. Her UN work includes an assignment to Somalia, where she was Editor-in-Chief of a Weekly newsletter aimed at the local audience as well as at UN Headquarters and Embassies around the world.
