The object of this book is not to recount once more the history of the Revolution: that can be followed in any one of a hundred text-books. Its object is rather to lay, if that be possible, an explanation of it before the non-French readers; so that they may understand both what it was and how it proceeded, and also why certain problems hitherto unfamiliar to people outside of France have risen out of it.

Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870 – 1953) was a British-French writer and historian and one of the most prolific writers in England during the early twentieth century. Belloc was also an orator, poet, sailor, satirist, writer of letters, soldier, and political activist. He was President of the Oxford Union and later MP for Salford South from 1906 to 1910.
