My reason for writing this story, I have met women who have married into the merchant navy with all it entails. I have met others who have lived in Iranand in other countries. I have known families who have experienced the death of children. I have met others who lived with cystic fibrosis and other genetic incurable illnesses and disabilities. I have seen television programmes of children being treated in Great Ormand Street Hospital. I know of lots of people who have adopted children for one reason or another. I have, however, never met anyone who experienced every one of these except my husband and I, and all of it in a ten-year span of life.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, the author married in 1961 and lived in West Ferry. In 1964, her husband was posted to South Iran, where she joined him in 1965. For the first five years of the eleven years she spent there, she commuted between United Kingdom and Iran. In 1977, her husband’s time in Iran came to an end, and the family settled in Kirriemuir, Scotland. She was suddenly widowed in 1978, and her two children were her main priority. She ran a bed and breakfast, then worked as a dental receptionist. Her many pursuits include Girl Guiding, Scotland; Scottish Women’s Institute; her garden; and in the past, her many dogs.
