Born on August 5, 1873, in New Hartford, New York, Alden received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State College in 1894 and later obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1899. His scholastic career flourished as he undertook roles as professor at Leland Stanford Junior University and later at the University of Illinois.
