Sein Werk überschreitet bis heute inhaltliche und stilistische Grenzen und macht ihn zu einem der wichtigsten japanischen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als politisch umstrittene Persönlichkeit beging Mishima 1970, nach einem gescheiterten Aufruf zur Wiedereinsetzung des japanischen Kaisers, rituellen Selbstmord.
