Vera Brittain, 1893 im britischen Newcastle-under-Lyme geboren, brach 1915 das Studium in Englischer Literatur in Oxford ab und arbeitete als freiwillige Krankenschwester im Ersten Weltkrieg. Nach Kriegsende engagierte sie sich politisch als Feministin und Pazifistin. Sie war Sprecherin der League of Nations Union, der Peace Pledge Union und des Anglican Pacifist Fellowship. Ihr schriftstellerisches Werk umfasst etliche autobiografische Romane und politische Schriften. Vera Brittain starb 1970 in Wimbledon.
