Preaching and poetic witness to life ‘through faith for faith’ (Rom 1:17), therefore, must be attempted with humility and with empathy for all sorts and conditions of human being, looking to Jesus who ‘humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross’ (Phil 2:8).

Clayton J. Schmit is the Arthur De Kruyter/Christ Church Oak Brook Professor of Preaching and the academic director of the Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts at Fuller Theological Seminary. An accomplished choral music director and composer, his scholarly areas of expertise include homiletics, aesthetics of preaching and liturgy, and composing, conducting, and performing liturgical music.
