In Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fourth Tarzan novel, ‘The Son of Tarzan’ (1917) Tarzan’s son Jack, sheltered from Tarzan’s past by his mother Jane, befriends an Ape on display in London. The ape Akut, an old friend of Tarzan, escapes his captivity and returns to Africa with Jack who kills Akut’s villainous captor. Thus begins a series of adventures that comprises Jack’s coming-of-age and eventual reunion with his parents in the jungle where Tarzan himself learned the ways of survival.
