Dr. William Manger, M.D., Ph.D., received his Bachelor of Science from Yale University in 1944 and his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1946. Dr. Manger has served in the Department of Medicine as Professor of Clinical Medicine at New York University Medical Center since 1983. He is currently a Lecturer in Medicine (Emeritus) at Columbia Medical School. In 1977, Dr. Manger founded the National Hypertension Association, gradually building up an impressive board of trustees and contributors. Under his leadership the NHA has conducted groundbreaking research on hypertension, and he has written and co-authored six medical books and more than 240 scientific publications.Dr. Manger has a lifelong history of championing the public health message of prevention as the first course of action with chronic illnesses. Eight years ago, when obesity in children came to the forefront of public concern, he and his wife established VITAL (Value Initiative Teaching About Lifestyle), a humanitarian health measure. The primary purpose of VITAL is to educate children preschool to third grade about nutrition and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.Dr. Manger has been awarded many prizes for his work in research and public health. In 1992 he was designated Distinguished Mayo Foundation Alumnus in recognition of his exceptional national and international contributions to hypertension research, medical practice, and awareness.In 2009 he was awarded the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association Humanitarian Award for his contributions to public health as a pioneer in the prevention of childhood obesity.In 2010 he received the PheoPara Alliance Science Award for his research on pheochromocytoma, a tumor that, if not recognized and removed, can cause hypertension, stroke, heart attack, and death.Throughout his career as a researcher and tertiary care clinician, Dr. Manger has devoted his time, resources and unbridled energy to improving lives, especially of the underserved the same reason the Mayo brothers established the Mayo Clinic.The contributing authors are also prestigious in their fields:Jennifer Nelson, M.S., R.D., L.D., is one of the leading nutritionists in this nation.
