Genghis Khan (también conocido como Gengis Kan  fue el fundador del Imperio mongol que gobernó desde 1206 hasta su muerte en 1227. Nacido como Temuyín, adquirió el título de Genghis Khan, que probablemente significa “gobernante universal”, tras unificar las tribus mongoles. Totalmente despiadado con sus enemigos, en sus campañas de terror fueron masacrados innumerables inocentes, millones según los cronistas medievales.  Genghis Khan tenía una reputación temible, pero fue un hábil administrador que introdujo la escritura en la cultura mongola, creó su primer código de leyes, promovió el comercio y concedió la libertad de culto  en el mundo mongol. De este modo, Genghis Khan asentó los cimientos de un imperio que, bajo sus sucesores, acabaría controlando una quinta parte del planeta.
