Our Divine Lord forewarned us that His service should be a warfare: Do not think that I am come to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. These seem strange words from the lips of the Prince of Peace. His kingdom had been foretold as a reign of peace: Behold a King shall reign in justice: and Princes shall rule in judgment. The work of justice shall be peace, and the service of justice quietness and security for ever; and my people shall sit in the beauty of peace, and in the tabernacles of confidence, and in wealthy rest. He shall come down like rain upon the fleece, and as showers falling gently upon the earth. In His days shall justice spring up, and abundance of peace till the moon be taken away. The government shall be upon His shoulder, and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. His empire shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace. We should have looked for a reign of tranquillity, with the even sway of royal mercy, just laws, lad obedience, and universal calm upon the earth.
