John Owen (1616-1683) was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. Owen was a spirited defender monergism, emphasizing the sovereignty of God and the authority of the Bible. He believed in individual and distinct worship of each of the persons of the Trinity. Besides his academic and literary concerns, Owen was continually involved in affairs of state.
