On July 6, 2012, the President signed into law a new two-year transportation reauthorization bill, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21.) This bill authorizes funds for Federal-aid highways, highway safety programs, transit programs, and for other purposes. This book responds to the MAP-21 requirement that the Secretary of Transportation to "complete an examination of the need for safety standards with regard to electronic systems in passenger motor vehicles."
