Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant, known professionally as Mrs. Oliphant, was a prolific Scottish novelist and historical writer who typically wrote as Mrs. Oliphant. Her career, spanning from the Victorian era to the dawn of the 20th century, included the writing of more than 120 works of fiction, historical tales, biographies, and literary criticism. Oliphant was born in Wallyford, East Lothian, Scotland on April 4, 1828, and began her literary career in 1849 with the publication of her novel ‘Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland’.
