Bevor sie eine Professur für Journalismus antrat, hat sie als Ärztin in Psychiatrien in Deutschland und der Schweiz gearbeitet. Sie ist eine ausgewiesene Expertin im Bereich des kreativen und therapeutischen Schreibens und hat das Institut für kreatives und therapeutisches Schreiben gegründet, das sie selbst leitet. Silke Heimes lebt in Darmstadt sowie am Meer und in den Bergen, wo sie Romane und Sachbücher für Erwachsene und Jugendliche schreibt.
