Il tema della rinuncia al papato, tra i più dibattuti della storia della Chiesa latina medievale, ha di recente attratto nuovamente l’interesse della storiografia italiana e straniera. Il saggio affronta, in forma sistematica, l’analisi storica dell’istituto della renuntiatio papae attraverso un’interpretazione nuova delle fonti giuridiche, teologiche e letterarie: dai primi secoli, alla più celebre vicenda di papa Celestino V, per giungere, dopo le ultime rinunce del sec. XV, all’attuale caso di Benedetto XVI.—–The renunciation of the pope, one of the most debated questions in the history of Latin Church, has recently gained new attention from the historians. This essay systematically tackles the historical analysis of the institution of the renuntiatio papae, through a new interpretation of juridical, theological, and literary sources: from the early centuries, to the famous episode of Celestine V’s renunciation, to the latest case of Benedict XVI.
