The story follows the fortunes of a young man in the divided state of Missouri, torn between his Union, abolitionist ideals and his emotional ties to a Southern family. The huge cast of characters includes President Lincoln, portrayed as America’s sacrifice for the sin of slavery.

Winston Churchill (1871-1947) was an American author, essayist, and poet. His first acclaimed work was Richard Carvel (1899), but he went on to publish twelve books and many plays. His naturalist style and political flair were characteristic of his writings. He worked in politics, and wrote about his tours of battlefields in World War One.
