A gruesome murder in York may be just what Scotland Yard Detective John Ferguson needs to
get his life back on track.
John had been a rising star before he joined the army to fight for God and country against the
Germans. He suffered from crippling shellshock, what is called PTSD today, when he got back
from the front, had no memory of what had occurred to him, and had dreams that were full of
blood and death. Flashbacks threatened his hopeful come-back.
England 1920
The country struggles to recover from the aftermath of one of the bloodiest wars in history
-WWI.
Howell, John’s powerful mentor before the war, has allowed him one chance to regain his
Scotland Yard position and the respect he had as a detective before the war. Howell assigns John
a high-profile murder case in York of a pawnbroker who has been savagely murdered.
John uncovers a surplus of suspects. Is it someone who hated the pawnbroker because he was
German? Or a townsperson angry that this pawnbroker was growing rich at the expense of
neighbors and friends? Perhaps a disgruntled war veteran? Perhaps a jealous lover? Or perhaps
the beautiful young woman who has stolen John’s heart?
He must prove himself. Can he find the killer? Otherwise, he will be ruined.
